Amy Redwing hauls boyfriend Brian McCarthy along on her latest dog-rescue mission because she may need backup. She's right about that but doesn't foresee that the dog she would save, a golden retriever named Nickie (just like the dog she had at the Catholic orphanage in which she grew up, and the daughter her ex-husband murdered before unsuccessfully attacking her) would become a guardian angel and ultimately a miracle worker during the next, most harrowing days of her and Brian's lives. The horrible husband, as rich as he is evil, has been searching for Amy, who changed everything but her face and body after the attack, to finish the job and, in the process, has teamed by chance with erstwhile stud Brian's loony ex-girlfriend, who's getting restless after 10 years' possession (and torture) of the Down syndrome daughter Brian sired; she has plotted the murder of the girl and Brian. To match the plethora of Dickensian coincidentiality in the novel, Koontz provides a Dickensian panoply of grotesque characters, including, along with the monstrous couple, conscienceless contract killers made that way by nihilistic modern fiction, au courant anarchism, and Hollywood crime fantasies. If not top-drawer Koontz, darned close to it, magnetically readable, and incorporating an eloquent plea for discarded and mistreated dogs everywhere. Copyright 2007 Booklist Reviews.

Set mostly in Southern California, this topnotch thriller from bestseller Koontz (The Good Guy ) depicts with unabashed emotion and wit the magical powers of golden retrievers—in particular, a female named Nickie, who will stop at nothing to save innocent children and protect their guardians. Amy Redwing, the survivor of a horrifying marriage, establishes Golden Heart to rescue golden retrievers, rehabilitate the abused ones and find "forever homes." A supernatural chain of events ensues after Amy and her architect boyfriend, Brian McCarthy, rescue Nickie during a violent intervention in a family dispute. Soon the pair are on a mission that leads to a transformative confrontation with a number of ugly characters—Gunther Schloss, a frustrated aspiring novelist turned killer-for-hire; Moonglow, a psychobitch in the Mommie Dearest league; and Moonglow's lover, Harrow, a self-obsessed sicko. This is the perfect book for thriller addicts who know the darkest hour is just before dawn and for canine lovers who remember "dog" spelled backwards is "god." (Nov. 27)
