Nanjing requiem / Ha Jin.
In 1937, during the second Sino-Japanese war, Japan captured the city of Nanjing, the former capital of the Republic of China. During this period hundreds of thousands of Chinese civilians and disarmed soldiers were murdered and up to 80,000 women were sexually assaulted by soldiers of the Imperial Japanese Army. Author Ha Jin re-creates the terror, the harrowing deprivations and the menace of unexpected violence that defined life in Nanjing during the occupation.
